What is twee fashion? A stylist breaks down the TikTok trend

Even if you’ve never heard the term “twee fashion” before, chances are you’re familiar with this style.

The twee aesthetic, which is currently taking off on TikTok, has its roots in 60s and 70s fashion, but had its main moment from the mid-2000s to the 2010s. It is often associated with retro fashion and colors vivid, and has been described as “kitsch” and “quirky”. A TikTok user describes as “an offshoot of the hipster and indie style”, which was heavily influenced by music and film.

So why is TikTok so obsessed with the twee again? Here’s what you need to know about the style and its comeback.

What is twee fashion?

The term twee, as defined by Miriam-Webster, means “affectionately or exceedingly delicate, delicate, cute, or quaint”. Pieces like mini skirts, dresses, Peter Pan collars, shiny tights, Mary Jane shoes, loafers, ballet flats and cardigans are all staples of the style, Dina Scherer, wardrobe stylist and owner of Modnitsa Style in New York told Shop TODAY.

“It’s all a bit feminine, it’s colorful and a bit retro, a bit nostalgic,” she told us. The pieces feature ’60s and ’70s-inspired silhouettes and while color is a key part of the look, Scherer added that hues tend to be more subdued, such as olives and mustards.

As with most fashion trends, the revival of the twee in fashion is likely due to its growing popularity on TikTok (the #twee tag currently has over 85 million views), but Scherer added that it also has to do with increased interest in second-hand shopping and thrift stores.

While the style isn’t for everyone, you don’t have to go all out to try out the trend. “If you’re someone who only gravitates towards neutrals and has a very classic, clean style, embracing this trend, I’d say it would be better in small amounts from a detail perspective,” Scherer said. “So maybe find an element you like, whether it’s the shoes, the colors, the details, the belt, and then incorporate that into your look.”

Here, Scherer has shared a few picks you can try to incorporate the twee style into your own wardrobe, and we’ve found a few more options that fit the trend as well.
