FTC Solar Demonstrates Effectiveness of Proprietary Wind Damping Technology in New White Paper

By testing wind speeds between 105 and 150 mph, RWDI determined that the Voyager tracker remains stable. This unique damping technology is essential because it prevents wind from affecting the surface of the modules, which can ultimately lead to catastrophic failures.

“These large-area modules with the frames on the outer edge dynamically behave in new ways that traditional design approaches cannot analyze. This can lead to microcracking and cell failure that is not visible to naked eye,” said Nagendra Cherukupalli, CTO at FTC Solar. “To mitigate these issues, FTC Solar is pioneering the use of multi-body dynamic simulation to fully characterize the dynamic behavior of single-axis trackers (SATs).”

To prevent wind damage during PV array construction, FTC Solar attaches dampers to each row before the modules and sets the row to zero-degree tie-down, which means no power or commissioning. is necessary to protect the row from the effects of the wind. Ultimately, this allows each row to be shielded and ensures the safety of installers in the field.

FTC Solar unveiled its brand new Voyager+ Tracker in September 2021which brought 2P tracking technology to market to support the transition to larger format modules and more complex sites.
