It wasn’t hard for real-life couple Andreea Diaconu and Simon Nessman to get into character on a shoot with Cass Bird portraying a romantic weekend in East Hampton. In fact, Bird gets credit for setting up the pair in the first place, according to Diaconu. Although the two first met in 2008, it wasn’t until Bird asked to photograph them together for an ad campaign a few years ago that something more than a friendship developed. “[Cass] booked us in because she thought we would have great chemistry, but since we were both recently single, maybe we had too much chemistry,” Diaconu recalled. “It was so embarrassing that the client decided not to take pictures [of us] together.” Although filming didn’t exactly go to plan, Diaconu, who is Romanian, and Nessman, originally from British Columbia, bonded over their shared passion for coastal ecology and public health. They married in July 2020 and now live in Tofino, Canada.Diaconu meanwhile is pursuing studies at Columbia University in New York.
In this photoshoot, the duo’s laid-back attitudes shine through the casual canvas of the garment. Stylist Katelyn Gray dressed the pair in dark colors, tailored suits and oversized sweaters from Prada, Louis Vuitton, The Row and Celine by Hedi Slimane, among others. “I’ve been wearing the same jeans and two sweaters for about three years now, so I’d say I [stepped] into a more refined persona,” says Diaconu. —Natalia Barr
