A former sales associate at a major grocery chain was fired for using the wrong gender pronoun to refer to his coworker.
The New York Post reported that Michael Nocera, 40, who worked at Walmart, told a co-worker he was a man and that he was “not a male” before saying the wrong pronoun to the woman in a work meeting.
He was fired from his position in August.
Nocera was working in a Walmart retail store when he was terminated, the Post reported.
He was fired after he used the incorrect pronoun.
The New Orleans Advocate, the local paper, said Nocero told the woman, “I’m not a male,” and that she was “struggling with a sense of inferiority.”
The newspaper reported that Noceras’ supervisor said he was being “discriminated against” and said “his words, especially those made with the wrong pronouns, could have had negative consequences.”
A Walmart spokesperson told the Advocate that the company has a policy against discrimination in hiring.
